Meh, that study is another woke joke. "But even in these enlightened times, men still do display a wider range of intellectual ability. Using several different measures of intelligence including IQ and SAT scores, more men are found in the high and low tails, according to Josh Aronson, a professor of applied psychology at NYU. “Yes, the pattern that I see most often in the IQ literature, and the one that accords with my experience of nearly 40 years being near universities, is that you find more men at the extremes of performance, more among the mind-blowingly brilliant handful that you meet in a lifetime, and also more among the truly intellectually challenged handful. Within the extreme tails of the distribution, however, performance is generally equal between the sexes. But yes, men seem to have an edge at the extreme right end of of the bell curve.” Hence the top men are better than the top women at chess.

That article is quite cherry picking facts that confirm writers world view. Without arguing the case further, I just have to point out how unlikely from evolutionary stand point it is that men and women have exactly matching cognitive skills or distributions.

There is one experiment with female and male babies that As soon as a baby open the eyes is a strong tendency of female babies for touching faces but male babies touch abstract objects. When both get big female pick carreers where is a social contact and men abstract carreers like prigramming and chess. Also there is an investigation where scientists discover that inyecting testosterones make a player more agressive and it makes them be more keen to have a win. Susan Polgar is not a natural player as was Bobby for example since her parents makes her play chess before she knows how to talk and have a very intense chess training since she was a girls, her biography shows that she was a experiment to make her a world champion, so she has a better study and training than the rest male players.

Men are overall stronger. When a woman beats a man (talking about the highest levels of chess), this immediately gets attention from everyone. I mean, there are mixed tournaments over there and who wins in the majority of cases? The answer is men. However, it's all statistics and probability and, therefore, once in a while, a woman will win such a tournament or several matches against men (as an anomaly or statistical extreme) and, consequently, that gets noticed more than the regular case when a man wins everything (because everyone expects it). I mean, there is a reason there we have women and men chess separately.

The statistics Wei Ji Ma outlines in his article are absolute gold. When thinking about the proportion gap of women to men in chess, I get very upset about anyone thinking less about women's abilities. Statistically speaking, there is a woman who is just as capable at performing at the level that Magnus Carlsen does. Tragically, because so many less girls and women are brought up playing chess, she has not been discovered yet. I say that knowing full well just how much of a statistical anomaly Magnus Carlsen is.

I haven't read the article yet, but it seems to me that it's a numbers game: if a hundred million men play chess, and only a million women play chess, then the best players will be men, all else being equal. If an equal number of women and men played the game, the top spots would be equally men and women. That's not rocket science, it's obviously the case that a lot of women that would be great at chess are doing other things, which is unfortunate. Edit: I just read the article, no surprises there.

Fascinating article - I have taken stats courses at both the undergrad and grad level, so I know I don’t understand statistics, but I found the analysis by Professor Wei pretty compelling. I suppose the next research question should be, “Why are participation rates in chess so much lower for women?”, particularly if that, in turn, revealed gender differences.,

  80. RupertMDoc

    RupertMDocΠριν 8 ώρες

Is there a gender gap in Chess? Yes, your audience is 90+% male. Is there a average or median performance gap by gender in Chess? Much harder to say, and even if there is that's no reason to form an opinion on any individual female chess player. Are women just much less likely to be interested in an analytical game that rewards memorization and study such as Chess? I think so. Is this bad? Well, for the women who entered chess as a minority it probably feels that way at times, but people being free to pursue what they enjoy and find rewarding is a big picture good for men and women.
