Chess baffles me sometimes and the opening to this game is a classic example of this. So after move 11, Wesley has already given up his bishop pair, has double-isolated E pawns, an exposed/un-castleable king stuck on the 7th rank, and a completely blocked in dark square bishop/H rook. I appreciate that these guys are playing chess on a level that most of us can’t even comprehend, but how is it possible for so many opening principles to be so casually disregarded without the position being completely lost, especially at such a high level. Why would anybody willingly enter the position on the board at 1:16? From what I can see, Wesley has little compensation for going into this position (though I am by no means a strong player). Was Wesley just going for a quick draw here? I hope somebody can clarify this for me 🙂

Best part of this game was that during the live stream, Magnus gave a sly smile when he saw the tactic, and then 1-2 moves later when Wesley saw it, he smiled as well. One of those "Chess is beautiful" types of moments.

I really liked the idea that they talked about in the livestream before Magnus played g2-g4 @3:35, So could have played Rc1 instead of Rc7 threatening mate and force a rook exchange. I think that would have given him better chances in the endgame.

It's at 3:32 that Wesley makes his 'mistake'. If he playes rook C1 instead of rook C7 he forces a rook trade which would simplify things. However in the actual game he missed this move and blitzed out C7, the rest is incredible by Magnus

The commentary on Chess24 was quite illuminating, citing Rc7 as Wesley's only real mistake. He was actually smiling at the denouement. Not for nothing is Magnus called the greatest end-game player of all time. Without any false modesty, I've seen him joke about it in the regular online rapid competitions. True or not, there can't have been any World Champions so willing to engage with those at the base of the pyramid.
