The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

King f1 can be winning because of next move bishop a5 deflecting the black queen from the e7 bishop. After taken by the whhite knight it is a mate ine three. Alex grishuk talked about the queen deflection but it comes with a check that s why king f1 is a good move

why did Magnus challenge Nepo's knowledge of this line? it's stupid to think that his small amount of prep could beat the however many hours of prep nepo did in advance. he could have just played another line, as he was up a game. no reason to challenge nepo.

King to F1 is suggested as the only winning move because on the next move you can play bishop to A5 and if the queen captures it doesn't come with a check, and once the queen is dislodged, there's a forced mate in 2

I believe the idea behind Kf1 is Ba4, deflecting Black's queen from the defense of e7. With the White King on e1, Qxa4 comes with check, so moving the king out of the way allows that idea.

Preparing for chess games using engines just destroys the game. Pffft. Might as well just play with an open book. Not fun at all. Beat Magnus with ur own moves and mind... This bs engine preparation stinks. Wow. What kind of satisfaction is that. Meh.

  35. MR LEVEN

    MR LEVENΠριν 2 μήνες

The reason the engine is saying king to F1 , is when you move bishop to A5, when Queen takes on A5, it dont come with check. The white can take bishop on e7 and so on

  36. Joshua

Seems weird Magnus would choose this line when he knew Nepo had this engine line prepared in game 1.

  37. Villager

    VillagerΠριν 2 μήνες

5:21 Actually the reason Kf1 is crushing is because it allows Ba5 with an attack on the queen, the queen has to leave the defense of the e7 bishop, and if queen takes a5 its Nxe7+ Kh8 or Kg7 leads to a quick mate as rxh7+ Kxh7 (only move) and Qh5+ followed by Qh6#
