This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

To strengthen the reason for saying “.. this position has never been reached again” would be the fact that you know that it hasn’t in today’s database, whereas if you were alive at the time of the game you would have more information on local pro games and perhaps that position had actually been reached but we just don’t have that information now. Correct me if I'm wrong but the point is that it is impossible to say at what point these 150 year old games were 'new', since adequate records from those days are difficult to find and I imagine many, many games were new at move 6 or 7 as theory was still in its infancy.

For everybody wondering why Agadmator did not cover Rh8+ at the end, it's probably because Qxg4 is simply a better move. Black will have to trade queens immediately to avoid checkmate, and Rook vs. pawns is a much better endgame than Queen vs. Rook.

I don’t like the sound of Morphy as a person, from what I’ve read of him, it sounds like he was a cocky douche who just sailed through life, he squandered his talent and lived off his inheritance until he died... Shame there were no chess players around at the time smart enough to teach him a lesson and make him eat humble pie. Lowenthal is just shit. At least now with Magnus he gets a run for his money by many other players in all time formats, so he’s earned his right to be cocky!

  96. The Gorn

    The GornΠριν μήνα

You don't understand Morphy at all. He was the ultimate gentleman, always agreeing to play other people on their terms. He didn't "squander his talent". Chess was not considered an honorable profession. He decided to pull his weight so to speak and be a Lawyer but it was hard for him with the Civil War and him being a southerner, and the people who came through his door just wanted to talk and play chess. Also he had health issues and died at a relatively young age. Morphy was a good man.
