Ok so I was looking on chess.com for games between Carlsen and Hikaru because those are always interesting. I found this one: www.chess.com/live/game/2529289174 On move 30 Carlsen checks by moving his knight to a square that's guarded by a pawn, but instead of capturing Hikura moves his king. I've been looking at the position for a while now and I can't understand why he didn't capture the knight, could you explain this to me.

Hikaru could have just checked the king, have the king attack the rook as he did, and pushed his pawn to protect the rook from the other rook keeping the bishop in a protection position from the pawn turing into a queen

At 12:00 Hikaru could push pawn c2 and Magnus would have to take the pawn first or Hikaru would either c1=Q or Rd1+. Yes, it wouldn't help much, but the game is already lost. :)

I have to say, even as a chess “novice”, per se, I really enjoy your clips. Is this analyzed with an engine?? grlifes.info/number/kqfQZnvVgNrLq7U/b-nteo What do you do on Rxb5 and let the a pawn run? What do you do against a7 ... a8Q ???? If you try to counter run with the c-pawn White throws in d7. Maybe you analyzed deeper or even with an engine, but at first sight your ... a6 idea does not work.

  38. Elise Blau

    Elise BlauΠριν 18 ημέρες

@eioshen boboi Not too sure what you are talking about, but in the position I am talking about White can throw in d7 and the rook cannot stay on c8. if the rook moves on the c-file d8Q, if the rook stays on the 8th rank the bishop can pick up the c-pawn e.g. But even if you calculated a better defense which still ends up in a losing position, ... a6 as suggested in the video was not an option. Not necessarily that I am right, maybe he claculated deeper or checked with an engine, but on my first sight rookxb5 refutes the ... a6 defensive idea.

I don't understand this eagerness among grandmasters to trade pieces, especially queens. It's particularly disappointing in Nakamura's case since he supposedly thrives in dynamic positions. Moreover, he has a losing record against Carlsen, against whom he has the most to prove, so you would think he would want to push as hard as he can for complexity.

7:05 - If Carlsen put the knight on E6 with a the fork (Check King and Rook), then the Bishop has no choice but to take the knight. Pawn in d5 takes that bishop and it is very near to becoming a Queen. The Knight or Rook has no choice but to try and stop that pawn. Put the Rook and bishop to protect it, Nakamura will have no choice other than to trade a knight for that pawn.
