  25. Jerry Liang

    Jerry LiangΠριν 19 ημέρες

and what happens if Harmon forces a check with Queen to H8. As you said you can't defend white Queen to C6. But it isn't a mate. The reason why black feels so crippled at the moment is how claustrophobic the set up is. The rook is rendered completely useless in that corner. As long as she opens the game up just a bit more, it won't feel so one sided at least.

  26. Jerry Liang

    Jerry LiangΠριν 19 ημέρες

At this check, White only has the option of King to G1 or G3, if G3 is played then Harmon can follow up with Queen to E5 and effectively destroy white's chokehold. If G1 is played then she should go Rook to E8 which will definitely alarm white. The solution is rather simple though. White pawn to F3 can prevent a rook queen mate but regardless, I imagine this is the kind of move that can seriously affect White's mentality and with chess, a huge part of the game is just that ain't it.

@7:30: Why doesn't ...Qxb2 look stronger here? It's not just a material grab. It strengthens play along the a1-h8 diagonal. Rad1 is the most reasonable response (Be3? Qxc3 gives black a 2nd pawn while both opening up the b file and defending g7). But after that, black doesn't have to make slow queenside pawn advances. Black has tempo to pre-empt the kingside attack with ...gxh4, like Beth did. The big difference is that in this position black has more strength along a1-h8 to connect that bishop and queen, so black is less vulnerable to attacks via h6. Rad1 gxh4; Bxh6 Qxc3; Qxh4 (with or without trading bishops first) trades pawns, but black got free tempo to get the queen active on c3, connecting to the bishop while freeing up the b-file for the rook. Black finishes ahead in material, with white's kingside offense losing steam. Seems good for black. White could just take the h4 pawn back right away. But then I like the line where black mobilizes the bishop on offense, pinning white's offensive bishop to the rook. It creates a dual play of both covering g7 and attacking white's side. Rad1 gxh4; Qxh4 Bxc3 What does white do? Bxc3 Qxc3 is a bad trade, with black 2 pawns up and the Queen again in a great spot on c3. White then needs to reclaim material: Qxh6+ Qg7, but trading queens seems bad for white, so the kingside offense is over. Now black can return to advancing that a-pawn. Qxh6+ Bg7 just forces the Queen to retreat. Black gains tempo while dominating a1-h8. Bxh6+ is the more likely attack. Yet the check doesn't buy tempo due to the hanging e1 rook. Instead of moving the bishop back to block, black can just hide the king with ...Ke8, which prevents a 2nd check, moves the King to a safer square (d7 escape while white has no white bishop), and keeps the e1 rook hanging. Now white has to do something about that rook. Counterattack Re2 is not available because we lured the queen off h5 earlier. Counterattack Rdb1 Qxb1; Rxb1 Rxb1+; Kh2 trading 2 rooks for the queen should favor black, especially with black to move next. So white probably hides the rook on e3 or f1, while black has lines like ...Bg7 to protect the kingside, probably trading off the bishops. Rf1 would put white in a very defensive position and weakens the line attacking e7. Either way, these lines seem to end ahead in material while stifling that kingside offense, and you're still free to develop the queenside after. This comes from better control of a1-h8 diagonal. Did I miss something? With Beth's line of Qc2, it too aggressively chases mate on f2 (which is obvious and easy to defend) while leaving white that strong kingside attack. Those checks cost too much tempo.

Excuse my novice question, but I froze the video at 14:05 which is the point when Beth resigned from the match. But, she is only 2 pawns short of what Borgov has. They each have a rook and queen to protect the king. Yes, at this moment white is in a better defensive position re: the king, but only a few moves could change that. Black king is more in peril, but moving to A5 relieves the immediate threat. Of course, I don't know whose move it is. If it is white's move, the pawn in row C could be advanced. Anyway, I see a mostly even board, so why did Beth feel compelled to resign? Thanks.

There is one thing I am thinking about, isn't Harmon's character based on Bobby Fischer? There are so many things in common, she is american, a child prodigy, never knew her father, had a problematic mother, difficult childhood, crushed the opposition in her home country, went on to fight the giants soviets and won to become a hero for the USA, there's even a subtle mention of Fischer when Harmon doesn't remember Benny's name and refers to him as "Bobby". I think this story is loosely based on the life of Fischer

And I thought I found one that answered all of the issues he'd raised leading into it by capturing the c3 pawn with the queen and protecting both the back rank from the white queen and preventing check and the square that Borgov moves his pawn to. Question why didnt she just put her king at A5? If she had she wouldnt have to worry about Borgovs Queen or rook, infact it would be the exact opposite, now she just needs to move her queen to A7 which borgov cant risk killing it with his rook because that only rook of his is crucial to have, he would be forced to move it away then when his queen goes to attack her rook boom she takes it with her queen, and unfortunately for Borgav its impossible for him to win with 4 ponds a and a rook, especially that far apart, plus the one furthest on the bored she can easily remove after borgovs queen is gone, all im saying is she did not have to resign she still had a massive chance

"The Bishop Blocks" .. Ganz : Queen takes Kings Pawn .. Beth : " Castles" Ganz : Knight takes Knight Beth : Mate in 3 , first check is with the queen.. the King must take..then the Bishop checks on Knight 5 ...and its mate next... absolutely brilliant.. she knew the board , without even being at it ...@ 9 years old..

King to g3 at first, so black could have chased with rock and queen from there. White could only have defended the first move by sacrificing the queen to block, a queen trade would have followed and at least you could have had an endgame race for pawn promotion. I love how the Directors portrayed the Beginning and the End of the show. At the car crash she is small and dressed in white (A White Pawn) & as she defeats Borgov she is dressed in all white with a faux white crown (A White Queen)!! Brilliant!! Absolutely Brilliant!! And the Fact that there are 7 episodes which represent her moving forward 7 spaces to promote into a Queen is the Cherry on Top!! 🍒

im confused, 5:23 so knights pawn to b5 and rooks pawn takes pawn on b5 with b6???? is that a thing? im pretty amateur at the game btw just want to know what happened.

What about Queen captures pawn in C3, instead of pawn in F6? And why king did not capture pawn in D6 instead of going in C6?

Queen captures pawn at C3 was my thought too. I'm curious if there's a reason that wouldn't work.

I suggest you to have the black pieces player have a black frame and not white as well. That way it would be easy to identify. P.s. love your videos

That woman is a weird looking chick...about as sexy as a bag of wet laundry. She has a kooky look to her...why not select a sexier female for the role but that is modern day film making...let's choose an off putting woman so guys can't get too excited over her looks...good that it is a big world out there with many other options.

Would someone explain why Harmon wouldn’t defend that position that he asked about with queen to c3? You take a pawn and cover the h8 square so the queen can’t checkmate.

  127. Erik G

    Erik GΠριν 2 μήνες

If she does that, borgov plays pawn to e5, and no matter how you play it out, she either gets mated or is forced to sacrifice her queen or her rook, game over either way.

  130. Juris Ločs

@Phil Adams Oh, silly me, I meant rook, not bishop as he shows later pawn goes e5 to later rook capture e5 that absolute best move wouldn't work if the queen captured c3
