This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

While I have been moving the chess pieces for over fifty years, Paul Morphy is playing a game I have never seen before and to this day I do not understand. As best as I can understand, Paul Morphy is willing to sacrifice any piece for development and position. Material means nothing to Paul Morphy. Paul Morphy is spiritual, intellectual, positional, and the greatest chess master known to me!!!

Capablanca took great pride in being compared by Amos Burn to Morphy. Capa wrote in 1914: "The magnificent American master had the most extraordinary brain that anybody has ever had for chess. Technique, strategy, tactics, knowledge which is inconceivable for us; all that was possessed by Morphy fifty-four years ago. One example: in his time theoretical knowledge of the openings did not exist, so to speak, yet what Morphy played fifty-six years ago against the Petroff Defense is considered by Lasker and me to be the strongest continuation for White."

BENJAMIN PHILLIPSΠριν μήνα
Remember when Josh Friedel said that Morphy probably wouldn't even qualify as a master today, because he played in such a weak era? I think games of this sort disprove that theory
BENJAMIN PHILLIPSΠριν μήνα
@Tushar V I understand what you're saying, but my point is much simpler: anyone capable of seeing tactics like these is going to be a master in any era, including the present one -- and yes, I do mean transplanted directly from the past and plopped down today. A low-level master is only 2200 strength. Is someone really trying to tell me that Morphy couldn't go to a contemporary chess tournament and crush the local 2200's? No way I could buy that.
Tushar VΠριν μήνα
But the point is different. Morphy wins in such dominant fashion because his opponents don't play very good moves. A master today would play better moves because of opening theory. Absolute strength and relative strength are different arguments. Same as assuming that Carlsen would be as strong as the masters in year 2200, which is unlikely because of the advancements in chess knowledge. This is a different argument than saying if Morphy was born in this era and had engines, because then that player would no longer be Morphy.

It's not a loss, he was minimized purposely by the US and by Europe. Europe at that time d iui didn't respect the US due to its early independence date 1775. The PGN files on this link purport to be a comprehensive list of all preserved morphy games, including five games vs Bird. timkr.home.xs4all.nl/ChessTutor/morphy.htm {Edit: never mind. The 5th Bird game was a simul which Morphy won..} I don't think we can ever know how great Morphy might have been because so few opponents presented any real challenge to him. Fischer thought Morphy would have defeated Staunton, but in a great struggle. Personally, I think Staunton knew enough from Morphy's work to see not only the possibility of defeat, but the possibility of an embarrassingly lopsided defeat. Not good for Staunton's business!

Originally, I thought Staunton was just a coward, but I recently read that Staunton actually had to cancel a previous match with someone else, due to a heart condition before Morphy even arrived in the UK. So, suffering from severe health problems myself, I think maybe what happened is that Staunton was hoping to be healthy enough to play Morphy. But then when Morphy got to London, Staunton realized he was indeed too sick, but he was also embarrassed to tell Morphy he came all that way for nothing. Maybe he kept hoping that after just a few more days or months he'd be healthy enough to play. But it never happened. Obviously, Morphy was justifiably angry, and I don't think he was in the mood to accept or believe any talk of ill health. Staunton lived a 15 more years after this, but I don't think he ever played a competitive chess match in all that time.
