World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen tops the field for the Airthings Masters, the 2nd stage of the Champions Chess Tour. The 12-player event will be played online on chess24 from December 26th to January 3rd and, as the first Major of the tour, features a $200,000 prize fund with $60,000 for 1st place. The winner also qualifies directly to the Grand Final in September 2021.
The tournament starts with a 3-day preliminary stage where the players play each other once before the top 8 go forward to a knockout. The time control is 15 minutes for all moves, with a 10-second increment from move 1. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: championschesstour.com

En passant -- when an opposing pawn moves two spaces and is next to one of your pawns, you can capture it as if the opposing pawn moved only one space.

Edvaldo OliveiraΠριν 11 ημέρες
This game's level was so high, that even chess24 commentators, GM David Howell and IM Jovanka Houska, didn't understand black's light-square bishop sacrifice. Aronian did, that's why he placed a rook on e6, preventing black's queen from giving check along the light-square diagonal, while Howell and Houska thought it was a mouse slip. Thanks Antonio for clarifying!

I don't get those who say Aronian should have played Rxe8+ (instead of Re6) at 6:51 saying that it is winning?! After all, after recapture by the Rook on e8, all Aronian has is Ng5 but Rajabov STILL has ...Qc4+ which is winning for Black.

tkell31Πριν 11 ημέρες
Very curious how it would have played out if Levon took the rook. With my admittedly limited ability it does look like that sets up a favorable position for Levon although he will be down material. Rook captures rook, knight attacks queen, queen has to move in a way that mate is still prevented, queen captures knight, queen captures queen, knight captures queen? Would love to see it played out from there since it seems like rook not capturing was a mistake.
