The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

After rook to G8 Ivanchuk can go king to H7 if Carlson tries to give him check then black queen will capture the rook. If he Carlson tries to capture the queen with queen then king will capture the queen then Ivanchuk is up a piece. Would be piece of cake then🙏

Near the end, I can't believe Magnus missed that attack on the queen (f7 or even f8), then pretty much checkmate. He'd kill me 99 times out of 100, but I bet I could beat him that one time lol. He's such a chess genius but sometimes even Magnus is human. Missed such a simple attention to detail. The next move seemed so obvious to me, and probably most people.

If the king is on h7, that isn’t checkmate right? The queen can take rook if it tries to deliver check since the black king covers h8 as well? What am I missing? I’m sure magnus would’ve played it if it was a forced mate in 2-3 If you play Rf7 pinning queen to king you can sacrifice your queen to avert checkmate right? I suppose the queen would instantly win the endgame but regardless it wasn’t mate yet
