This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

My move was Bb4 thinking to take the forward undefended black pawn with check, but if Qxg6, then my answer to that would have been Qh5 offering a queen trade and protecting my passed pawn... If the pawn had taken my bishop then Qxg4 with check and queen defends the pawn on g6.

Agadmator: Just take a second to work out the best move here Me, an intellectual: easy, queen h8 Agadmator: well you can play almost anything except the absolute worst move you could make is queen h8. It's laughably bad. It's the worst move ever made. People are talking about the sheer idiocy of this move 150 years after it was played. Me, an intellectual: Haha, Lowenthal. What a wally. Qh8? Pffft.

I managed to play a strictly worse move lol. I wanted to play Qh8 but I saw Ke7 and thought "oh, that means two attackers and we'd just trade queens" ignoring the fact that one of those attackers was the king and cant attack into check. So I played bC6, the idea being that if Qx then the queening square is unguarded and if Kx then I can play Qh8 and the king wont have time to go to e7 before I promote, also missing Qg6+ like Lowenthal. So not only do I lose my pawns, but there goes the bishop too. Jesus christ this game makes me feel stupid.

Personally I don't think it's among the worst blunders ever played. IMO those either walk into a forced mate in three or less or otherwise turn a winning position into a losing one. This "merely" turned a winning position into a drawn one. ...and yes, I would have committed the same error. It didn't even occur to me that the g6-pawn was undefended. My move was Bd5 hoping to draw the queen away from its defense of f8, but that also falls to the same idea.

My favorite way to win looks like Qd8+ and sacrificing the queen, because you promote with check after Kxd8 and you also win black’s g pawn with check, then you can promote a 2nd queen after exchanging off the black queen.

That move was literally the first move I saw, and I immediately (okay... After about 10 seconds of studying) realised that it was utterly appalling and no one in their right mind could play it. Just shows that good chess players can still fuck up outrageously 😂

Löwenthal should have gone Queen to h7 instead, capturing on g7 next, thus guarding g6, f7 and f8, with the possibility of a second Queen on f8 as well as an instant check.

Worst move i've ever played; i played a move Nh8?? Which allowed the opponent to checkmate my king with Bh7#. (i was playing with black pieces.) Nh8 was the only instant losing move, and i also don't ever recall seeing another game where checkmate is delivered by a bishop on h7. Nomally the queen does that job.
