The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website:

Antonio, I'm not sure if you read comments but watching you, and your explanation of top play has inspired me to think way deeper about positions than I thought I could. My most recent accomplishment was sacrificing two pieces in what the engine called a brilliancy!! I was down two pieces but up like +1.5 with many traps to fall into mate. I may only be a 1400-1450 but simply watching games by Tal has made me a better attacker and I believe your format of videos is short and sweet but very informative. Thanks for all you do 🤗

  79. Ralph Wagenet

    Ralph WagenetΠριν 3 μήνες

@Hoss I really don't know, but a single tournament can have a hundred or more games in it, and one tournament per year over a century would add up to ten thousand games. It must be far larger than that, but that's all I can say.

  80. Hoss

    HossΠριν 3 μήνες

@Ralph Wagenet Around how many games would you say are in the database right now?

  81. Ralph Wagenet

    Ralph WagenetΠριν 3 μήνες

A large database is maintained of all of the chess games played in high level competition. What agadmator is saying is that the position that you're currently seeing on the board was reached in one previous game in that database, and in that game, a particular move was played. Usually when he says that, the player in this game makes a different move, resulting in a position that is not found in any other game in the database. At that point, he will almost always say something like "and now, at move X, we have a completely new game."

His only problem is that he is kind of an a hole but God bless him, we have to give him that for all that he gives us. We are in the presence of greatness folks. He fights against the greatest chess minds on a daily basis and beats them. He is a freak of nature.
