This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Love the quote of Bird above the board. When I was a student I played a game of chess with a roommate (we were both garbage), when another roommate came in - who was an actual GM - he analyzed the position for 2 seconds when he asked: „ Wouw, is this an actual position or did you guys just threw some chessmen randomly upon the board?"

So I'm only at 7:26 of this game and Morphy just retreated. I'm placing my guess right now that he lost the game because he was inactive and not aggressive right here. Could be wrong, but as someone who is just ok at chess, always attack :)! Edit at 9:20 I went for Queen to d1 (there was no break down why I messed up badly and was just wondering if anyone could point out how I messed up badly there, Wait but seriously, as this game goes on. What did I miss by moving the Queen to d1 instead of the rook to d1 (I did not find f6. Tried a bunch of Queen moves Rip)

So the Queens Gambit show says the Morphy went "crazy" why is this the first I'm hearing of this. In my impression, Morphy is the top guy. Did chess Obsession cause it? Morphy is still the best. It would be nice if Casablanca and Morphy could have matched up, too bad of the time difference

Yall not ready to hear this but agadmator is the reason behind the world giving chess any attention right now he was the only person passionate enough to tell us all stories about masters about feelings about history about chess transcendence. How many of us all rediscovered chess thanks to Antonio how many of us built communities friendships around it how many of us looked back at ourselves and undertood ourselves better because of his efforts. I think a lot of us. I am really grateful Antonio for all that you did to us and I believe your passion reached far and beyond I think if you weren’t attracting audiences new people to chess there wouldn’t have the queens gambit series there wouldn’t be the same growth for other youtube channels if I saw hikaru streaming before this channel I would’ve hated chess the competitive sport I love chess the art
