This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Is it possible that Staunton deliberately lost his first game, thus eliminating himself from the tournament, just so he would not have to face Morphy in a final match?

  51. Giri Iyer

    Giri IyerΠριν μήνα

It's possible considering that he avoided him like the plagued!!!

  52. David Anderson

    David AndersonΠριν μήνα

Also, let's remember, this was a simultaneous exhibition held by Morphy, so he was actually keeping several ongoing games in his head at once.

  53. David Anderson

    David AndersonΠριν μήνα

So let's see... When Morphy has both eyes open he beats Kipping no sweat. When Morphy has both eyes shut Kipping beats him no sweat. Therefore, to make the match even, Morphy must spot Kipping one eye. Presumably he gets it back after the game.

  54. Giri Iyer

    Giri IyerΠριν μήνα

It's strange, even though kipping lost the first two games,it seems he played better. But I thought even though he won this blindfold simul,it wasn't all that good. Come to think of it, morphy wasn't all that great either. May be bcoz Morphy lost, that's why I feel that way.

@dstreetz91 the amazing thing about morphy is that he played remarkable supercomputer moves… the best move… very often and consistently. He did this before computers, and is more impressive in retrospect, the better computers get. The only flaw of his chess play is how bad his opponents are but he destroys them with perfect precision moves . and it s mind blowing i think his talent is incomparable

While those are amazing numbers the era during which Morphy played is far different from today or even 60 years ago. In 2020 when engines have been crunching basically every opening in the history of chess and people have analyzed everything a whole lot more it's a lot easier to draw a game since grandmasters know what lines are losing for either position.
