The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website:

I always admired Magnus because of this. He is diferent from all the other profesional players. He goes less prepared and more about creative chess, and even in that way he manages to win. Thats also why he uses rare openings like the english for example, so the oponents can't prepare well against him.

  52. Thejes Kumar

    Thejes KumarΠριν 2 μήνες

I disagree. He relies on his memory way more than being creative. That's why he got destroyed by Wesley So in the Fischer Random tournament, as he can only play chess but gets confused when it's the same game but with different starting positions

why is pawn + rook less valuable than knight + bishop?

  66. Qimodis

    QimodisΠριν 2 μήνες

@Chandir makes sense, basically I thought rook was valued 6 for some reason sorry

  67. Chandir

    ChandirΠριν 2 μήνες

Some say a bishop is really rather a 3.5 but again these metrics don't apply to every position, for example a centralized knight is much more valuable than a knight on a1

  68. Chandir

    ChandirΠριν 2 μήνες

    @Qimodis They say a pawn is worth 1, Knight 3, bishop 3, rook 5, Queen 9. So a rook + pawn = 6 and Knight + Bishop = 6 so that doesn't really help you decide what's better.

  69. Qimodis

    QimodisΠριν 2 μήνες

@Chandir But aren't they valued less?

  70. Chandir

    ChandirΠριν 2 μήνες
