The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website:

Watched the first 2 minutes of opening principles violations by Nepo trying to throw Magnus out of prep, which only resulted in lost tempo and unnecesarily exposing the position of his castled.. skipped to the end to see the inevitable resignation then clicked off. Better send in Lc0 to challenge Magnus.

  20. Shawn Nusbaum

    Shawn NusbaumΠριν 2 μήνες

Perhaps I'm not understanding the excellent chess being played, but Nepo had the E4 position attacked 4 times in the critical moment of the game. Why not just take the Pawn there with a Knight? Magnus could then take the Knight with a Knight of his own, but then Nepo takes with the Rook on E6. It could result in an exchange where Magnus then takes the Rook with his other Knight, but then loses that Knight to Nepo's other Rook. I don't really see a problem. The result would be Nepo losing the exchange, but gaining a pawn and some position on the board, plus not having to resign.

I wouldn't have resigned just yet. I would have tried Rf8 to avoid the fork and then traded my queen for his rook. I don't like black's chances, but I would have played it out and looked for an opportunity. If he didn't prepare with Bd4 first, taking my queen would have dislocated his N or disarranged his pawns. If he did prepare, I would have another move to prepare something like Ne8 to open up my black bishop.

Nepo played badly today. You can see early on his knights could be easily trapped. I think tiredness may explain part of the reason he was so outplayed. Nepo had 3 consecutive days of matches against Giri, and it's then straight to the Final against Magnus. Five consecutive days with no rest day, and multiple games per day is just too much for anyone.

I still hate these early resignations. If you really want to show respect resign after your 1st move with black vs Magnus because we know 'he never makes a mistake'. If Magnus was in that spot with black no way he packs it in. Fight to the bitter end, it is not being disrespectful imo.

Do the interview at the library or at the bar. They will be impressed.
